Post: Week 1

Week 1 Post Instructions

Each student is expected to write ONE initial post in this forum, creating your own discussion thread. Your posting should be approximately 250 words and is to address the questions below. The deadline for completing your posting is Thursday at 8:00 AM.

Hit the button at the bottom of this page to add a new discussion topic. When you create your discussion topic/thread, label it YourLastName_Week 1 in the Subject line. Type your posting in the message box. This will allow us to know which thread belongs to which student. Each student will have her or his own discussion topic/thread.

Week 1 Post:
(In addition to your readings, this post will draw on some of our BI100 work as well.)
Both Hiebert (TBC) and Fentress-Williams (AB) make several claims about what biblical texts mean for today or at least what implications they have for modern people. The goal in this post is for you to see how they use skills of critical biblical scholarship to support their claim about what the text means for us today. By “skills of critical biblical scholarship,” I’m referring to approaches such as source criticism, translation analysis, etc. that we studied in BI100.

Discuss one case in which Hiebert or Fentress-Williams uses critical biblical scholarship to support his/her theological claim. Be sure to explain what claim the author makes, what method(s) you believe s/he is using, and how effectively you think the author has supported the claim.

Because your classmates need you to complete this assignment by the deadline, no late entries will be allowed.

 2. After you have created your initial posting and discussion thread, you are expected to make responses to two of your colleagues’ posting. These responses must have substance. “Good job,” “Well said,” “I agree, “or similar comments do not constitute a substantial response. There is no required word count for responses. It’s about the quality of the response.

Please don't view your classmate’s initial posting until you have made your initial posting. The deadline for making your two responses is Friday at 8:00 AM. This means that you only have 24 hours to make these responses. Plan accordingly.
