KWubbels_Reflective Essay #2

I am hesitant to make sweeping generalizations about groupings of books like the prophets and Wisdom literature.  Prophets like Isaiah contain a love song (Isa.5:1), just like Wisdom literature, and the predominant literary form found in Wisdom literature (poetry) can be found in most all the prophets.  The concept of genre has its usefulness, but it tends to put up road blocks rather than build bridges.  I wonder, for example, who was the first one to write, “their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed blood” (Prov. 1:16, Isa. 59:7) and which passage Paul was actually quoting when he wrote Romans 3:15?  Yes, after a few classes we could probably recognize the source of a randomly chosen passage as of prophetic or wisdom origin.  But do they actually portray God differently?  Is the portrayal of God in Isa. 45 actually all that different from Job 38?  Doesn’t Proverbs insist that wisdom is God’s creation and contrast it with the folly of men, as does Jeremiah?
(Prov. 8, Jer. 51:15-17).
Maybe I’m just being contrary, but I think not.  Feel free to set me straight with your comments.

Ken, it's clear that the unity of Scripture and its message it important to you, and you are certainly right that there are important connections between these books.

But I am pushing you to recognize the differences as well, even if those differences are in the style in which the books present the truth. Even if the books and sections of the canon do work together theologically, what is the distinctive insight that each brings. You picked passages that might fit together, but obviously we could pick passages that contrast more sharply.

In this post, I was looking to see what you had learned over the past weeks about these sections of the canon. Even if you want to push back against the approach we are taking, I need to see you engaging it. This was my primary way of accessing your learning on these sections of the canon, and I didn't get to see that here.
