This course seeks to advance students’ ability to analyze and contribute constructively to modern conversations about the Bible, sex, and gender. It explores four key areas of study:
(1) the hermeneutical issues involved in reading the Bible alongside modern concerns;
(2) the difference between ancient and modern constructions of sexuality and gender;
(3) the historical, literary, and ideological dimensions of key biblical texts;
(4) the role that the reader’s culture and orientation play in interpretation, explored primarily through feminist, womanist, queer, and gender critical approaches.
