Week 3: Learning Activities for the Week
Week 3
This week, you have several learning activities to complete before we meet in class on Saturday.
1. Based on your reading about Deuteronomy, add a Deuteronomy column to the chart of Law Codes. Make sure that you have a sense of Deuteronomy's distinctive vocabulary (how it sounds different than Leviticus, for example) and its claims about obedience and reward. Bring that new version of the chart to class on Saturday.
2. One you've learned about Deuteronomy and read Collins pp. 117-150, try to see for yourself the "deuteronomic" character of the chapters assigned from Joshua, Judges, and 1 Samuel. Mark in your Bible (in some way) passages in those books that sound particularly "deuteronomic." Be prepared to show us those in class.
3. By finishing Deuteronomy, we are completing our study of the Pentateuch, so it is time to draw your conclusions and observations and this section of the canon. Look ahead at the instructions for Reflective Essay 1 (p. 9 of syllabus). In this paper (due Mar 24), you'll be comparing the Pentateuch with the Deuteronomistic History. So, start a draft of the paper (for yourself; not to turn in) in which you capture notes and thoughts about the Pentateuch. When we finish the Deuteronomistic History, you can come back to this file and have something to work with.
4. Be sure to also be working on your Interpretative Essay. By now you should be completing step 4.
No online discussion this week.
