The vocation of ministry calls for interpretation in countless contexts: interpretation of scripture and tradition; interpretation of liturgy and the arts; interpretation of culture and society; and interpretation of families and systems. Although every context of interpretation requires its own skills and dispositions, many skills and dispositions transfer from one context to another. This course explores fundamental elements of interpretation, basic theoretical and faith-based frameworks for interpretation, and especially the role of context – the contexts of the interpreter, the contexts of the work of interpretation, and the contexts of “what” or “who” we are interpreting.
