Students will explore the variety and purposes of Christian spiritual formation practices through theological conversation about the writings of church leaders, scholars and contemplatives in very different cultures throughout church history.
We’ll focus especially on how these leaders, scholars and contemplatives :
1) explained the adoption and adaptation of various spiritual formation practices in different places and periods,
2) made claims about which spiritual practices should be common to all communities that follow Jesus and can unite us in peace and self-sacrificial service,
3) described and demonstrated how their spiritual practices opened them to the Spirit’s empowerment to continue Jesus’ mission to alleviate suffering, cultivate joy, and save this planet.
