“Sound Preaching, Sound Theology: The Substance of the Message”
is designed to work with preachers to work within their congregational and denominational context. It is not intended to focus on the style of preaching, but more so to focus on teaching through preaching the theological tenets of particular churches and congregations. Students will put in conversation denominational tenets and doctrines with preaching the sacred texts. Through preaching, students will be prepared to help congregations and seekers understand the faith claims of their individual congregation and denomination. Students will be responsible for a short papers to outline their own biography in church life; a class presentation to the class on your particular understanding of how preachers help to shape the denominational identity of a congregation, and students will be responsible for writing and preaching a sermon to last no more than 7-8 minutes. The reading in this class will be from two texts, once excerpted section of two books, and one published paper from the Academy of Homiletics' Theology and Preaching colloquium.
